The “No Country for Old Men” is not reaching at all. He maims but doesn’t kill his quarry in the opening, and he maims but doesn’t kill his quarry later. Of course the consequence of the latter is much more severe.
I think that part is figurative. They aren’t really floating, but it is a visual cue that they are online. More visually interesting than people just sitting around.
