I’m not so sure about the idea that he’s overcompensating. That seems to me like more of a Trump thing, and I think Maher’s smugness has more of an offhand quality that makes me think he really believes deep down he’s just that awesome.

As dumb as it is that some conservatives believed The Colbert Report was unironically on their side, at least they were being consistent with their beliefs. What I think really boggles the mind is the conservatives who acted like the show was an offensive stereotype of conservatives but went on to support Trump.
