$500k is an insane amount of money, but it’s not unrealistic to say after taxes and immediate obligations they are left with ~ $6k a month in income for things like food, transportation, entertainment, etc. That’s plenty of money, but not enough to buy property in many places without years of saving.

the 500k guy already is taxed pretty hard, as they will pay the max for the year and still owe more thanks to AMT, probably about 15-20k more than they paid throughout the year.
