Are we twins? I will say, joining the military (at least in my experience) was one of the best ways to divest myself of preconceptions and prejudices. That, and the neighborhood I grew up and my friends in HS. Not that I am a paragon of wokefullness, just something I found helpful.

That’s one of my (admittedly selfish) fears for the incoming administration - a hiring freeze and a virtual elimination of hiring incentives for veterans.
