The V10 is a much older engine. It came out in 2003, it was in a concept car a couple years before that. Pumpe Duse fuel system, which was VW’s latest and greatest in 1999 in Europe.

Yep, this is exactly the job I had to do with my V10 Touareg when I got it a couple years ago.

Sure. Also different eras—Fangio certainly seemed able to get more out of the skinny-tired 1950s cars no matter what team he wound up at. Cars also were much more fragile back then. Maybe a lot of the 1950s-70s champions also simply had a better feel for how to simply take care of the equipment so that it would last…
