Since it hails from the country that calls the autobahn its own, I want to know the difference between the Taycan and any Tesla on their ability to SUSTAIN high speeds for a significant amount of time before the powertrain has to derate for heat or battery management reasons.

The NEDC test cycle is done at temperatures between about 20 and 29 C, and thus many automakers turn down the emissions equipment in Europe knowing that there is a loophole that allows them to do so. There literally is a rule that effectively says emissions equipment can be turned down in odd specific circumstances if

It’s CO. As usual, you can’t trust Jalopnik editors to get anything relating to emissions issues correct.

And of course bikes emit more CO, very few of them have catalytic converters at all.

But, know what barely produces any CO at all? Diesel...

Once again all coming back down to we’re getting nitpicky over very tiny

I suspect they’ll go back to just a Haas livery like they had in years past.

That is one thing about Germans, they do tend to engineer their cars and test them in the conditions that are present on the autobahn. High speed, high load for extended periods of time.

What particulates? That’s what particulate filters are for.

Well, depreciation hits German luxo-barges hard. And there’s no nicer interior to be in than an Audi A8L. You can get used ones at around the 4-5 year old mark for near or under $30k. That ought to blend in well. Has AWD. Can even get a dieselgate A8L if you wanted to be able to go over 800 miles on a tank and get mid

This right here is why I get all worked up when I hear people say they want to outlaw diesel. They’re coming from the standpoint that everyone drives like them, largely short distances in urban environments. And while yes, maybe a majority of people do, it’s still infuriating to have rules made that don’t take into

Absolutely! If I had the money for something new-ish that would be the way to go. Something that could do 95% of daily driving needs on electric power but have the extended range should I choose to go longer distances or more remote locations. I think they’re a great compromise vehicle in that regard. Best of both

NOx isn’t that hard to get passed with diesels if your engineers and managers dont get too worried about consumers not liking adding a special exhaust fluid every so often (by every so often I mean every 6000-15,000 miles). That’s literally the entire reason VW cheated.

Just a smidge. Nothing overt at all. Nope. :P

I think I’ll have to check that out!

Yeah, putting a nuke plant near active faults and right on the ocean, not the best planning ever, that’s for sure. And would be a good argument against nuclear on much of the West Coast being that there’s a massive network of active faults that regularly have earthquakes.

Good luck convincing the greenies that nuclear is the best way forward. You’re not wrong, by the way, but the politics of the situation is pretty bad and as a number of Jalopnik editors showcase daily, personal political beliefs do far more talking than facts do these days.

Great point, and also contradicting the author about how he doesn’t understand how hybrids could be of any use.

Being “emissions free” assumes that the electrical grid can also generate 100% clean energy. They’re working towards that end, but part of the problem with wind and solar is that they’re intermittent in nature, and unless we can mine and produce the materials required to build massive battery arrays, the most

Great story, Erik. Definitely a larger than life personality. Definitely got the impression that the most important thing to them was their family and just interacting. You kind of get that too with how they conducted the show and liked to poke at people on air.

Remember when Porsches that carried the “Turbo” label actually had a turbo bolted to the engine somewhere?

Pepperidge Farm remembers!

Eh, not really. Older indirect injected diesels, especially without a turbo, were nowhere near as torquey as the modern turbo direct injected versions. They could rev a bit better when you modify the snot out of them, but it seems the torque is never as good as the later DI units, even with a turbo strapped to the old

Andy Wallace! Haven’t heard that name in awhile. I remember seeing him drive Dyson Racing’s Lola-MGs with the Thetford livery in the mid 2000s when I regularly went to ALMS races, they gave Audi fits at times despite for awhile not even being in the same class. Pretty cool thing to stamp his name on an already great
