It seems pretty clear that some of the people involved hate the Patriots AND the NFL wants to strengthen their position over the players, and doing it to the most successful player helps that cause.

Uh, it is a huge deal. Someone within the NFL leaked that to Mort and it was wrong. That killed the Patriots and Brady in the public eye and they knew it was false and did nothing about it for months and months on end.
