That's a really good point. In the article I linked, the author indicated that many fanfic writers are non-conforming people (either in terms of gender or orientation).

Some RPF writers might only like the celebrities' physical form. I don't know. But I think that other writers do incorporate their personality traits (as best as they can discern).

I don't necessarily think RPF writers are deciding who the people in question are. They are asking the question "What if?" and exploring that in writing, which has no reality or bearing on the real world.

RPF/RPS is definitely a trickier part of fanfiction. But I think it's harmless. The truth of a person's sexuality is a constant that no story can change. No one (as far as I know) is quoting RPF as proof that a real person's sexuality is not what that person claims.
