They’re not priced at a premium solely to make a big return. They’re priced that way because the technology is expensive. Electric motors are cheap and simple relative to a combustion engine, but a battery pack capable of generating enough energy to move a 5,000lb vehicle is extremely expensive.  Look at the Model 3

That’s why I’m in favor of Thorium reactors rather than an over reliance on renewables that require large scale battery storage. (Though I’m also totally in favor of tons of renewables, just want a more reliable base load.)

Though LFP batteries lack some energy density, they often make up for it with really good charge and discharge rates. A 3-5C charge and discharge rate is fairly typical with them. That’s kind of a double whammy in a good way in a certain sense as well, because a lower energy capacity means less overall power required
