That’s an aspect of it I hadn’t thought about—the media here frames this story entirely as one of entitled white people taking from helpless brown and black people, I hadn’t even considered how the generational issue intersects with it. Thanks.

Holy diabetes Batman! This lady is setting her kids up for so much fail. I never got taught proper nutrition as a kid, and it’s one of my biggest regrets that it’s taken me so long to get to a good place in that regard. I really hope that somebody helps get those kids on a better path.
All the owners we ran into who were completely clueless about the relationship between rent roll and property value were the long-time owners. We’re buying from someone who’s been in the place for a couple of decades, and yes after seeing the title report she definitely needs every penny she’s getting, but we’re also…
“but kids need to learn about the disappointment of actually eating healthy early in life.”
Thank you, that’s exactly it! The title/phrase made me wonder what was up with man buns in particular, but nope, just clickbait it turns out.
I think you’ve identified a major reason why some things don’t make sense across class lines. Middle class people look at the actions of many people in desperate situations and go “but this would go better if only they would behave normally!” and the people in those desperate situations are like “people are going to…
yeah but I guess by that same point, can’t you just pour your own fucking drink? Why go to some overpriced bar that can’t even turn on a light to shout at people and be served cheap liquor for 4x what it should cost?
Where is the actual source? I’m in east LA (aka west coast ground zero for gentrification), and just went through the home-buying process and frankly can’t figure out how to do anything for myself without becoming part of the problem. Decision 1: buy a duplex because housing prices are out of control and that will…
I’m thinking of architecture and other design fields. Right now the time that it takes to make a custom design is just too many hours for a client to be willing to pay what it’s really worth. So if people want to make a reasonable salary commensurate with their level of education and responsibility, they get caught in…
whoa, I had no idea. Poor nuns.
oh for sure it’s bad management. The industries I’m thinking of though are in so much trouble, the financial model is so far off of what the market can support, that the whole thing might collapse if companies didn’t overwork their employees and generally tread on thin ice. They probably do deserve to collapse, but…
Your last line is the key—if they companies want to. But contrary to your experience, many companies do indeed put projects in one person’s hands, do avoid hiring recent grads, and overall do a ton of short-sighted things. It’s actually endemic in certain industries, and often the only way for a person to make sure…
I guess I’m always the asshole in an interview who will be like “don’t answer that, we don’t need to know that” when a coworker asks something they shouldn’t. I guess I shouldn’t count on every office having someone policing those things.
I’m a designer and I see it among specialists. For instance I usually see this in color experts or materials librarians, basically people whose roles could expand if they wanted them to but ultimately most of us can get by with just an occasional consultation with.
I thought “family values” was code for “keep the women in the kitchen”?
ah, found guilty of skimming. I plead distracted by the headline.
Sadly I did not know this, and until very recently did wear my hair up every day. One more reason to keep it cropped short I guess...
That is bullshit. They can ask you if you are available to travel X% of the time, or if you’re able to work irregular hours in the face of deadlines, or conversely if you are able to conform to the standard office schedule with reliable transportation for timely arrival. But they can NOT ask you about your family.
why is this not a concern for women, who put our hair in tight buns, ponytails, and braids much more often?
I find that people really underestimate how much women would benefit from men getting equitable family leave. As long as family leave is only a lady thing, then it’s one more reason to discriminate against us. Once it just becomes a person thing, then it’s expected, everyone is set back the same amount (read:…
