Yep. This officially turned me off to Serena. The call was atrocious, but she should feel ashamed of how badly she ruined Naomi Osaka’s moment. That outburst was because she was getting her ass kicked. One bad call with that much game remaining doesn’t cause so much drama unless you’re frustrated with something else.

That sort of frustration isn’t unusual for top-level athletes, and yeah...there’s something of a pattern there. When she was penalized for threatening a line official, she was a couple points away from being upset by Kim Clijsters. Her 2011 blow-up came while she was losing to Sam Stosur. She’s a fantastic player, but

And how exactly does any of that justify booing Naomi Osaka, who by all accounts seems to be an awesome person?

You mean McEnroe, the guy who literally got tossed from an Australian Open (i.e. ejected from the tournament) while *winning* a match, due to 3 code violations? That McEnroe?

Looked to me like Serena was frustrated because she was getting overpowered, where she’s usually the overpowering one. Osaka played great and was a force out there.

Gotta agree. Osaka outplayed her, no question. I feel bad she couldn’t enjoy this victory, because she earned it.

The umpire was right on all three of those calls. It sounds like Williams thought the “coaching” warning was rescinded because she told the umpire she’s not a cheater, but of course that’s not how that penalty works. The call is made against the coach (who admitted he was coaching from the stands), so the player can’t

It’s amazing to me that people come away with that feeling sorry for Serena. That was such an embarrassing performance. Much credit to Osaka, she’s a true champion and I hope she comes back.

Slamming your racket so hard into the ground that it breaks because you lost a point is not class.

Serena stans are turning into psychopaths who froth at the mouth at every slight against her. Imagine being do deranged that you have to be told not to boo Naomi Osaka of all people. Serena’s the GOAT but I’m so done with her ridiculous fans.

Not out of line. Serena’s coach admitted to Pam Shriver that he was trying to coach Serena. Everyone, including Serena, knows how penalties are given out. Maybe it’s her coach’s fault for trying to signal to her, but she was responsible for her own behavior after that.

yeah, she had Williams dead to rights from the opening serve.  No-one forced Serena into those early double faults and wildly missed ground strokes.

Serena has literally threatened physical violence against a line judge and raised her racquet in anger towards the woman and the commentators made excuses for her. She’s the golden goose and they know it.

She did not take it like a champ. Serena takes the majority of the blame for this fiasco. She’s the one who ruined Naomi’s victory with her behavior.

He admitted coaching in the ESPN interview immediately after the match ended.

First warning to Serena for coaching. Her own coach admitted to Pam Shriver after the match that he had indeed tried to coach her. The gesture was meant for her to approach the net more often. He thought she hadn’t noticed it, but still, it’s the attempt that matters. Players have been using this excuse (“I didn’t

Osaka was so far and away better today it wasn’t even funny. Her ability to step up and hit great shots serving up 5-4, after Williams stalled for forever complaining to the referees and the crowd showed their ass, was unbelievable.

Apparently the coach admitted signaling in a Eurosport interview?

This was so hard to watch. I hope Naomi Osaka knows she would have won this match on her own if all of this shit hadn’t happened.

for FOUR years!!!!!
