I wondered the same thing, too. What I think happens is that since they temporarily share the same nervous system and feel the same thing the other partner is feeling while melding, the Asari would likely feel pleasure from their partner’s genital stimulation, too (such as thrusts and grinding).
No, you misunderstand, there’s no such thing as sex *and* melding, because their form of sex IS the melding. Asari didn’t evolve specifically to mate with other species, that was just a biproduct of their unique reproductive system.
But the melding *is* Asari sex, otherwise why would they have functional sex organs if there’s no male of the species to impregnate them? I’m probably putting too much thought into this, but the games did as well - there was an entire codex page, conversation with Liara and subplot with Samara about Asari reproduction…
Actually, I think Asari look the way we see them, and those people at the bachelor party just saw something of their own species in them (I.E., the Salarian noticed the colour of her skin and scales, while the Turian focused on the head fringe).

One part is that the romances have basically become a series tradition (if not a running joke among fans, like “best girl” or “waifus” among anime communities) since Fox News did their horribly inaccurate report on the game, another is that people genuinely like the characters and find the romantic subplots…
Actually, this cluster has two spacefaring species: because there are no Mass Relays, the entire game takes place in only one cluster (travelling from solar system to solar system would probably take a few more years without them).
