My impression of the Chase Field retractable roof is that it exists to make a grass field possible while also having games played in a climate-controlled environment. That they can open the roof for a few games when it's not 105 degrees out is an added advantage.

They replaced the FieldTurf with a newer AstroTurf field in 2011.
