I have heard of people on probation who go through all the steps and still can’t get out from under it. Like “okay, now you do this” and it just continues.

Prison is not called slavery, but for some gee golly reason, you are far more likely to wind up there if you are black. They can't legally enslave you, but they can make a system so you are still owned by somebody. Its never ended in some respects.

I think one thing we can say is that North America was an awful place if you were born the wrong skin color or nationality way back in the day. It still is for different reasons, and the one that has persisted, is treatment of people of color (who remain in slave like positions in an entirely different context).
