My guess and it’s 100% pure speculation is that he got taken by a 419 scam or its ilk and they’re too embarrassed to admit it. Money doesn’t just go away. Someone has it somewhere and the fact they’re not pursuing it most likely means it’s out of country somewhere that doesn’t particularly want to or cannot cooperate…

My wife works with patients in home; some elderly. She has had to argue with patient NOT to give financial information to cold callers on the phone.

Yeah, I’m curious about that too. Plus, this is a classic case of unjust enrichment - just because someone accidentally sent you $1.4 million dollars doesn’t mean you’re entitled to it.
