While I agree with you there was an article a while back about Below. Basically it stated the development there would be delayed when ever they have a showing. They said it is just easier to not say anything and keep moving forward on development than to stop and build a part of the game for a demo.

I think its more bad PR for Square Enix than Microsoft. They just offered the money for it and Square wasn't forced to take it.
