I think it ultimately depends on whether one likes the punster or not. From one of your friends, it's fine and a reason for ballbusting. If it's someone you find tiresome, you just think "Idiot."

Dave Barry also pointed out that puns are not jokes, and they deserve our contempt just for the fact that a punster will always look at you with a look on their face like they're the cleverest person since Benjamin Franklin.
