Kara crushes a lump of coal into a diamond and drops it on the landlord's  desk.

Actually he’s going by the name of Shaun. While I agree Yeoh is largely wasted, she’s there to give us a taste of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Avenger. And the movie keeps meandering away from the plot mechanics into interesting, beautiful or funny moments of whimsy and even lyricism, enough to allay boredom at the formula.

Cornelius in the flashback looked enough like Archer that I assumed he was meant to be added to the list of potential fathers.

I was thoroughly amused by the subtext though. “You know, I’m not sure I can really be my best self and truly help the community unless I give myself permission to put on a costume and rough up some motherfuckers from time to time. I mean, shit, everyone else I know is doing it.

she kind of is going BuzzFeed, though, with the split between actual news and whatever clickbait BS gets them eyeballs.

-Pulitzer Prize winner Kara got absolutely snowed by the prison-industrial complex. I always wonder how much Supergirl intends to critique journalists with these storylines and how much is an accident.

Fun Fact: This is the fourth time in AV Club history we’ve gotten newswires on Ted Lasso, Jeopardy!, and DaBaby, all on the same day.

“DANI ROJAS, DANI ROJAS, DANI ROJAS, FOOTBALL IS MYTH!!”

The secret weapon of this show isn’t its heart, it’s the facial acting on display by almost all of the main players, but especially Waddingham (I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actor who makes every muscle in her face put in work), Hunt’s Hush Puppy eyes, and of course Goldstein’s “the imperceptible facial twitch I

I don’t doubt that that’s true. I think his actual defense-of-BeanDad tweet was measured and fair. But people were so irrationally angry about the whole affair that Ken may as well have said Stalin actually isn’t all that bad.

It is incredibly funny to me that in 2021 Ken fucking Jennings, a little Opie-looking dork who everybody likes, is 2 hot 4 TV.

What I’ve read of the Discourse is kind of the opposite: people mildly saying “I’m not sure I like this as much as the first season”, and getting deluged with ad hominem rants about how they must be pseudo-alpha males who can’t get laid (or, most famously, about how they must despise women and only dislike season 2

i do love when people respond to a review with ‘it doesn’t need to be great, it just needs to be a thing on tv i can watch’ as if anyone would read a reviewer who says things like that!

Odd thing is, considering how few shows get regular recaps here anymore, this is definitely a passion project for Huges.

for my money iron man 3 had some of the funniest stuff in the mcu.

it makes it harder and harder to say that these are assembly line. Like, we know they’re going to fight a bad guy at the end and 95% chance they’ll win, but if every other major franchise is any indication there is no formula for consistently making lovable characters that we want to return to other than hard

A “B?” That’s an Asian “F.”

I’ve said this before around these parts but after a year of watching HBO Max’s “straight to the dumpster” quality Blockbusters, it makes it harder and harder to say that these are assembly line. Like, we know they’re going to fight a bad guy at the end and 95% chance they’ll win, but if every other major franchise is
