Delta starts with $400 vouchers, then escalating to $800, much like United did in this scenario. Beyond that, the gate agents can individually discuss with passengers what they’ll take for a bump. Their handling of overbooking is far superior to United’s hamfisted approach.

Pre-merger American generally did so as well. Observing people go from greed to fear over escalating vouchers were fun even when I didn’t partake. When I did, pretty decent trade to spend a couple hours working in the lounge versus at home for the next leisure trip I didn’t want to use miles for.
