I think the UK The Office worked well because you do see Brent begin to wake up in the final moments of the final episode. The person Garvais reminds me of more than anyone these days is Finch, the ultimate villain of ‘The Office’. A pseudo-intellectual thug who expects everyone to find him funny and charmingly transgressive, then retaliates with cruelty if they don’t.

He wasn’t exactly a villain; he didn’t make crass and racist jokes because he was ideologically driven. David Brent tells jokes because he just wants people to like him, and he often knows when he’s crossing a line.

This cancellation for a tax break business seems less like burning down one’s own home for an insurance payout, and more like a landlord burning down tenants’ homes for the insurance payouts.

I don’t know what kind of evidence her defense presented during her trial, but reading about the case earlier today, I can’t imagine voting to convict had I been on the jury.
