As an officer of election, I would suggest no questions asked absentee voting, but I'm up for any ideas that would increase voter turnout.

Ditto. His articles have definitely taught me a lot about myself and where I need to improve.
Man, I’m a pretty big wimp, but I feel emasculated by proxy after reading and watching that.
I’m not even sure if it surprises me anymore that people, sometimes well meaning people, think being poor, living in a “hard” neighborhood, and being abused in one way or another means they know what it’s like to be black. Like you pointed out, I’d wager most black people didn’t grow up like that. And there are plenty…
Wow I never knew this story at all. Definitely only heard about the corruption. The little I’d ever heard about the revolution was the stupid, supremacist idea by that TBN guy who thinks everything bad that happens to Haiti is because of a pack they made with the devil to win their independence.
As others have said, us white folk don’t do abstraction very well. Someone sitting on a monument is much more visceral for us, much more of a defilement of what the monument stands for, than actions that actually do defile what it stands for. That statue is allowed a bigger safe space by white people than minorities…
Man, reading James’ response reminds me of evolution deniers or really any other denier of scientific fact. They take the existence of single digit percents of “scientists” (sometimes not even real scientists) as meaning something against the 95%+ of relevant scientists that say what the minority is saying is a load…
Except the law doesn’t allow them to do that. If I had a bad experience with a group of black folk, or even more specifically a black fraternity, I couldn’t use that as an excuse to deny service to another group of black folk or fraternity because I’ve “had problems with [their] kind before.”
Holy crap, I almost spit out my breakfast after reading that! As I was scanning the comments, I was thinking, “They probably have the common white belief that all history is “human history” and so can be used, even used to make money, in an objective, indifferent manner.” Never been so surprised at how right I was.
Funny how these proclamations are never etched on these statues. Oh wait, not funny. I meant massively disingenuous.
“as a white person, saying something and being praised for it is completely different than a black person who has been saying it for years.”
OMG that gets me every time. It’s bad enough to give parents unsolicited parenting advice, but to just up and act like your some random child’s parent??? With the parent right there even???
I’ve been an infant daycare worker before, and I’ve never understood the compulsion of some people to want to touch strangers’ babies. I will do the (I’m presuming) super white thing of turning into a puddle of babbling goo when I see a baby, but without being too awkward about it and certainly without touching the…
And course it’s people’s taxes that could be put to better use being spent instead of the money of those perpetrating the offenses.
My God, I was thinking the same thing. Plenty of “good people” make “bad decisions.” And those bad decisions have consequences, including criminal and civil punishments. With great power apparently comes less responsibility.
This advice can be fine if it is sufficiently nuanced. But more often than not, it isn’t. Yes you can learn to not react to your reflexive, mental response to someone verbally assaulting you, but for many that takes years of intentional practice or just being born with that kind of disposition. My reading of Greek…
More accountability. Put that police chief’s ass on the griddle. See, you guys always worry about sending one officer to jail. Do you think police will not sacrifice an officer? They absolutely will. Yet the police chiefs remain in place.
Very informative. This series is so important.
Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Didn’t that time America was great have kids selling lemonade on the sidewalk? Oh yeah, those kids were white.
