Ugh really? That’s disappointing...

Athleta seems to have some good swimsuit options that have neither ties, padding, nor wires. Not the bra-sized swim tops, which all seem to have underwire, but some of the one pieces and swim tops look like they might work.

As I said in another comment, I fully admit that they are many states in which it is probably still hard to live as an LGBT person. I wouldn't be surprised to see anti-LGBT behavior like this in those places either.

Yeah someone pointed that out, and I’m sure it’s not exactly pleasant or easy to be LGBT in many of those states either.

Yeah I think that phrase “retrograde culture” combined with the bad press recently made me overreact a little...

Pick any city with either a big port or a naval base.

I’ve always wondered if it would help kids learn to read better if we scrapped the “one size fits all” reading curriculum and just encouraged kids to read difficult books about subjects they loved. A kid’s into fantasy? Give him/her The Lord of the Rings or The Dark Elf trilogy. Mystery? Start ‘em early with The Woman

Yeah, that would happen if all sex workers were independent contractors with safe working conditions, which they aren’t. Pimps and brothel owners who don’t give a shit about the health or safety of their workers or the fact that their workers are slaves know that they’ll make more money forcing a woman to to be raped

This is true. I’d guess some of those states still aren’t particularly great places to be LGBT today either.

Oh I agree with a lot of her points, I just really found the phrase “retrograde culture” very irritating.

According to Facebook they’re from Azerbaijan, which sadly makes their views towards LGBT folks not too surprising, since anti-sodomy laws weren’t repealed there until 2000 or 2001, I think.

Oh God I hope this is a hoax. Please let this be some dumb kid who reported a fake shooting because he didn’t want to take an exam or something.

For sure. But I also think that the standards for “whiteness” are weird and convoluted, and tall, blond, blue-eyed isn’t the only form of whiteness (although those are definitely the valued traits). For example, my uncle. He’s a tiny, dark-haired, brown-eyed, very tan guy. But he’s 100% of Portuguese descent and

I mean this is anecdotal but the Brazilians I know consider him white. Not sure about Brazilian society at large, though.

When someone accuses me of being “too PC” I like to respond with “PC? Do you mean Polite and Considerate? I didn’t know that you could be TOO polite and considerate.”

Yeah the overall coverage has been very frustrating. I think that one phrase in this article just reminded me of all the terrible stories I’ve seen written about Brazil and it just made me a leeeetle too angry.

You know, I saw that in the top image but didn’t make the connection until you pointed it out. It would have been a lot better if she had quoted that or made it clear that those weren’t her original words... I think one major issue with this article is that she’s assuming a greater level of knowledge than most

Yes, I did read the whole article. And while I agree with many of her points I felt that the way she expressed them wasn’t the best way to say it. Mostly that one phrase, “retrograde culture.” That was a terrible use of words, and she should have used something else.

Catholicism is a far too conservative influence in Brazil for sure, but the evangelical churches having been gaining quite a bit of power, and several of the politicians mentioned belong to those groups and not the RCC.

I read that as a reference to the coup that installed the dictatorship in the 60s, not what just happened with Rousseff.
