I think we’re talking more about the tone than chronology. Tonally Ds9 got a bit darker with the Bajoran Occupation and the Dominion War. The Orville is more explorey with the occasional socially challenging episode like TNG was.

I feel like someone who is so outwardly bubbly and so desperately seeming to be the center of attention whilst being bubbly always is hiding some aspect of themselves that is dark, negative, and tacks towards domineering.
