We bought our 12 year old niece fantasy books for her birthday (Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series - it’s amazing) and when she told us how she spent the rest of her birthday money on a follow-up to the series I never felt more proud.

I can believe that. I work in IT Managment and some of my best engineers either could not simply afford to go to a nice college or just did not care. At the same time, I have hired people who went to Stanford who ended up being mediocre to average at their job.
