Well, it gives the illusion of a boogeyman that if they “succeed” at anything they can say “Look! We overcame the odds and we’re so awesome!!!11!!!1!” and if they fail they can blame the boogeyman for working against them all along.  It’s fiendishly clever but also really fucking gross.
