If you're truly driving an old 911, bug, bus, or any other air cooled horizontally opposed engine - then smoking on start and for a few minutes is totally normal.

1. Air Cooling

When considering power vs. weight, there are some cars that clearly didn't live up:

I see a lot of tiny cars on this list, but I believe a small engine in a small car can still be just fine. Trouble starts and fear sets in when you get large cars or vans with tiny engines.

There have already been ton of replies, so I expect I'll be lost in the noise, but I'd like to nominate 3 cars (and I've owned or driven all of them)

'68 VW Beetle autostick (scary as hell, couldn't do 50)
'78 VW Bus with 3sp automatic
'81 VW Westfalia. 67hp in a 5000lb+ vehicle. it was REALLY SLOW.

NP- but only because it's worth at least that in parts. I'd love to have that TDI for any number of projects.

If anybody asks what a supercharged straight-8 sounds like, here's the answer. Like nothing else.
