Besides, if I'm not mistaken, won't most information from Curiosity be routed through orbiting satellites, first? So it only has to have enough power to reach the satellites, and they can do they heavy lifting back to earth

I agree that it shouldn't be as easy to remote wipe. However, I'm sure for ever 1 time it's been used maliciously, there's been 1000's of instances where it's greatly helped someone. It's a fantastic feature if you lost/get stolen a laptop or iphone.

Much like I wouldn't want a computer to read an article out loud to me, I wouldn't want to type by speaking out loud. It's awkward, it's noisy, and it's especially got to be more tedious. Plus, I can easily type 70WMP accurately, I don't think I could speak that fast. I'm not a writer, but those are my $0.02.
