The 2ndGen and 3rdGen are not as bad as the 1st, though the new one I sat in at the autoshow was worse than the 2ndGen. Not as bad in an automatic, but still painful. The Mazda 3 is a horrible choice. It has one of the most painful cabins I have driven. The center console just intrudes too far into the driver area.

Some people are lazy or mystified by how to drive a stick. Others don't like commuting with a stick. As for more fuel efficient, that is starting to frequently not be the case, (Though I trust my own ability to conserve fuel more than a slushbox's.)
