I don't think he ever intended to kill her or harm her in any way. Gemma thought he was capable of it but Tara was the one he always forgave which is why he was ready to go to the prison to save her and the children and Gemma couldn't undestand that since he wouldn't be merciful to anyone else.

He always chooses the club over his family. Even in this episode when he talks with Nero he says Gemma harmed my club, my family, my boys. The club is mentioned first.

I know about that scene but that was more about money earning. The scene with Clay was him admitting he is nothing in comparsion to her, she has a meaningful job while he's an outlaw.
