I think it was easier to do when Palin was just a local politician, with no one other than friendly local media covering her (pregnancy #1). When she got bumped to the national stage and had the spotlight on her and her family, there was no way they could cover up the second pregnancy.

If you read the first wife’s account, she says that when she went to talk to people in the church about the abuse they told her to be careful what she said in public about it because he had career aspirations. Seriously.
