I am so sorry that you were so blatantly treated differently than your brother. That is horrid. I hope your parents have gotten a little better over time...

Yeah, I got a distinct vibe of men feeling that boys must need their father’s influence and care as much as possible, but don’t care about providing their daughters with the same. Probably a little of column A, column B, and column fuck this noise.
I got my hair cut in a pixie cut when the trim of my adorable, flattering bob went wrong and it had to all be cut short. I knew it wasn’t a great look for me, but I tried to be positive about it until it grew to my preferred length. I visited home for a couple of weeks, and my dad held his tongue until he had me…
Nikki, I believe it was? Yeah, I think as a book standing alone I wouldn’t have hated it, exactly. I just felt so let down by it I couldn’t get on board. I also was so disappointed by how the different narrator voices didn’t come across as genuinely unique as in Trainspotting. Eh, we’ll see how this movie shakes out!
The article states “It will be loosely based on Welsh’s novel, Porno, which followed the lives of the characters ten years after the first book.”
Ehhhh... Trainspotting is one of my favorite novels, and it was an excellent- and pretty faithful- movie adaptation. I reread and rewatch both pretty every so often. I kind of hated Porno though. It felt akin to the Boondock Saints sequel. I would like to be excited about this but it’s hard to imagine even a loose…
Hmm. It was a long time ago, but kind of a vivid memory. Perhaps it was alluded to, or perhaps it came up in conversation about the slavery represented in the book.
That happened to me on a plane. The flight attendant came by to ask for my drink order and I looked up at her with probably the ugliest cry-face, then hid til she moved on.
My experience as an avid childhood reader was that coming across racist incidents or themes in books turned into positive teachable moments. I would ask my mom for contextual information when I didn’t understand a topic, and if it was something racist (or sexist, or what have you) I would get a sit-down talk about how…
I feel for you- I’ve been there! I pray you can at least have peanut butter, alcohol, or cheese. All of those are pretty fun :)
I, personally, am able to tolerate small amounts of caffeine such as what’s found in chocolate (thank god).

Yep! I used to not be able to have any, due to a heart condition, but constantly craved chocolate. Now that that’s corrected, I can have caffeine, but don’t react well to the amount in coffee or soda. Chocolate works out just fine, but that’s just me!
And those of us who just don’t handle it well (thanks to prior needs of zero caffeine ever- I feel your pain)! I’d love to try to learn more about sampling coffee, but never would unless this sort of thing were available. I settle for being a chocolate nerd.
Same. I freely admit that I don’t like coffee, I like coffee-flavored sugar cream drinks.
My main reason is that I don’t feel like spending more than $20 and maybe two hours on creating a costume for one day ever. I have some good ideas, but executing on a budget doesn’t really work. Also I have never cared. Even as a kid, it didn’t matter to me. Can I just show up and have someone give me candy?
It’s especially puzzling considering how many of them supposedly design their own personal wardrobes. If they can do it for their own non-model bodies, why not others?! Perhaps an added challenge to tailor for a brand new body’s idiosyncrasies, but c’mon.
I have lost two super-close friendships in the past few years, ending up with the same feeling of “burned down archives.” I have to thank you for putting words to this feeling. Both of these friends were men (I’m a woman) and it’s so interesting to me to read all these stories of mostly girlfriends’ falling out.
In this case, I kind of equate not desiring the job with being incapable of it! But yes, also valid and important.
No. That cannot happen. The random chromosomal sorting will continue to occur in all populations. Especially as the worldwide trend of women getting pregnant later in life continues. Plenty of women in the world never know of DS before giving birth, and among those who do have such prenatal care, plenty do see the…
