The thing is, I don’t want “better” news links (read: ads) in my feed. I want no news links in my feed. All I want in my feed is what my friends are up to, and by the way the Most Recent first (thanks, SocialFixer). Of course, that’s not compatible with FB’s business model, so it’s never going to happen.
If I had a dollar for everytime I did something that was legal-but-stupid, I wouldn’t need to worry about job interviews...
Even if it’s not illegal, it’s not smart. It exposes the company to potential accusations of illegal bias in hiring even if isn’t true. If nothing else, it’s a flag that the company either doesn’t prepare its interviewers well or has a culture of disregard for doing things “right”.
Came back to say thanks for the tip. I picked one of these up with the premium package, leather, the works -- the last one the dealer had. $25K MSRP, $17.5K actual cost. It’s going to be perfect as my daily commuter, and I don’t feel guilty about splashing on a new car. It’s probably the only time in my life I’ll…
That’s not a bad deal for a younger person on a budget shopping for a brand new car.
16. Surely “Blockd”?
Yes and: they’re also designed to promote whichever services have paid the automaker to be featured in prime screen real estate. (Dear SiriusXM: please stop. I am never, ever going to subscribe to your service that was overtaken by better technology a decade ago.) They’re a perfect a example of what happens when the…
Since we’re on the topic of shitty user interface design... I’m scrolling through the story and suddenly the page jumps. Why? Oh, because Gawker decide to autoload a couple more stories that I have expressed absolutely no interest in. See curbwatching’s post of how UX starts with respecting what the user is trying to…
#2 here caused my great-aunt’s death. One morning she woke up hungry, but there was no food in the house, and she’d always been told not to grocery shop on an empty stomach. They found her two weeks later, still sitting in her armchair, dead from starvation.
I was also a 70s kid so by age 8 I was routinely left alone after school to supervise / feed my 5 year old brother. At that age I was also old enough to go to the corner store (across two busy streets) to fetch cigarettes for my parents. Another thing that seems unthinkable today: my parents would leave us sitting on…
I bought a pair of the shot glasses way back when Shep first featured them. They’re still the first glass I reach for when I’m drinking anything chilled or iced.

For sure. Neuroscience also seems to be prone to this problem.
Also known as “p-hacking”, the social sciences in particular are rife with this problem — and we’re going to see a lot more of it as more data becomes available to more people without the proper statistical training.
Came here to say this. QNX was one of, if not the, best in the game. RIM (as BlackBerry was called back then) really bought it to try to revitalize its phone business, but it turned out to be more valuable than that.
For the last couple of hours now I’ve been wandering around the house singing “American Dog Tick” to the tune of “American Woman”. Just me?
My advice is to have dual citizenship. This has worked out great for me both traveling to Europe and returning to the US.
Back when I was a young and inexperienced manager, I got an unexpected call from the HR department at another company where one of my team had applied for a job (unknown to me). They said they were doing a salary reference check, could I confirm that X’s salary was $number? I was so stunned by the number I reflexively…
It’s actually pretty straightforward, although using the GPIO pins on a Pi is not nearly as well documented as for Arduino. Here’s a really good intro that will have you controlling LEDs and reading digital inputs in a matter of minutes:
Back to basics, as always. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”: William Morris, 1882. If somebody is competing to be the Most Minimalist, they are going to solve their problems by looking outside themselves.
