My take was that Mel is some ancient creature preserved via magic and that it is now time for her to move on to a more suitable host — Jon Snow.

My guess is that the Lannister / Dorne war doesn't need to fully develop, just time enough for the movement of troops from Dorne towards points north so that they are close by when the real threat comes over the Wall.

My spec is that the show needs there to be a Lannister / Martell war so that the Martell army can be moving north when the real merde hits the fan next season.
