And yet, he did.
Or, to be more accurate, he and Tim Minnear were inspired by THE KILLER ANGELS, a historical novel about The Battle Of Gettysburg. (Whedon was fascinated by the idea of looking at the war from the side of the losers).
Of course, it's not an EXACT parallel; hence the sci-fi elements. But that IS

So we won't get the "Dexter Vs. Hannibal" crossover?

So NOBODY's going to point you to Old Skool Who?
ok, I don't blame them, that's a whole different kettle of fish.
But CITY OF DEATH is a lot of fun for newbies.

If you haven't heard it until recently, you haven't been paying attention. It's been a problem for years; if you're associating it with this one genre, it's because this one genre is so dominant and in your face right now.
But the core of the problem is that studios are now opening movies simultaneously in THOUSANDS

Advertising costs have skyrocketted in the past couple of decades, as Hollywood has become obsessed with the need for a big opening weekend. (on even big hits, the drop-off in ticket sales after the first week is usually about 50%).It's got nothing to do with the genre per se; it's about the financial realities of

MST3K: THE MOVIE (aka "This Island Earth") was my introduction to the series, and it worked really well.

CONSTANTINE is relevant enough, as they've used him on ARROW- and were planning to make him the main character of that JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK thing Del Toro was attached to.

If Disney were evil enough , they'd put some of their resources into getting a good pirated copy on the net before it hits theaters.
I mean, if Disney were evil.
Which they may NOT be.

Apparently one of the reasons the film is out of chronological order is that if it WERE in order, Travolta would seem to be the main character… who gets shot by a supporting cast member 3/4ths of the way through. Moving his death up restores the balance.

CATWOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, and JONAH HEX were flat-out critical and commercial bombs. SUPERMAN RETURNS, CONSTANTINE, and WATCHMEN underperformed substantially.

BVS is costing MORE than 400 million.
Not making your nut back on a megabudget franchise launcher is a disaster.

People keep saying that these things "can't" bomb… until they do.
It really doesn't take much to end a franchise; all that needs to happen is the average filmgoer looking at it and going "eh, I'll catch it on cable".
Superman and Batman have both crashed before- multiple times. Warners will always bring them back,

so comparisons to that upcoming masterpiece BVS are still valid.

I've got the theory that Disney is holding off on doing anything with Indiana Jones until one of their other franchises falters. (And they're probably waiting until even Harrison Ford admits he's too old for the part, of course)

The thing is, Marvel HAS to make the superhero thing work; it's all they have. Warners has other options… and truth is, the DC movies have been more bombs than hits.
The whole reason we're getting a Batman-centric BVS and a Joker-centric SS is because those characters are percieved as being "sure things". But if THEY

Oh sure, we're in a phase when movies are becoming more generic and tv is becoming more individualistic.

We're looking at the real danger a studio faces with these mega-franchises: Warners is currently shooting WONDER WOMAN, has BVS and SS essentially in the can, but still needing expensive finishing touches,, and has a half dozen others far enough along in development that they're already starting to spend substantial

Some of us DID.

And it's a disasterous idea to start your mega-franchise with a film in which you have Superman- you know, the most heroic guy- cause a hundred times more destruction than 9/11- and then follow it up with a film whose entire plot is built around reminding people of that repeatedly.

"truly bombing" is a relative term. As I said, they NEED it to make a billion.
