Most shop vacs are just a motor and a blower wheel separated by a plastic housing and with a filter over the blower wheel, no gears. I believe they were just using a regular shop vac.

The reasoning was the air that is sucked in doesn't come in contact with the motor. Which makes sense because if you're sucking in dirt and stuff why let it get into the motor?
