The navy has been pushing these things for a while. There was a hi-larious demonstration video of laser weaponry against a stationary motorboat, with an obvious cut. 

An ASBM approaches at high Mach speeds. The laser will have ... maybe? about a second with its effective range to add a bit to the ablative heat on the missile before it strikes the ship and destroys it.
