My guess is that Cleveland actually was not that interested in Puig, but in order to get the haul they did they had to take him and the rest of his contract.
His Pre vs Post ASG splits are pretty crazy. He was having a solid borderline All-Star performance before the ASG.
This is what happens when you try and manage an AL game like its an NL game. If there is no DH there is no issue.
