On one hand, I disagree with his assessment. But at least he didn’t take the Alex Proyas route of “Try to make big flashy blockbuster that bombs spectacularly only to spend the following years railing against Hollywood for making blockbusters” level hypocrisy. Expressing disdain for something in the hopes of

In a lot of ways Hartman was the last real comedic craftsman of his kind. I love Will Ferrell but his brand of character is often too dependent on chaos rather than any measure of control. Hartman’s characters always felt like they had history to them and he performed the hell out of them.

Phil Hartman’s death hurt in a different way than Chris Farley’s. Everyone knew Farley had problems and it would have taken a much more optimistic person than me (and I’m borderline ridiculously optimistic) to think that his story would have had a happy ending. But the way Hartman died was so out of left field, so

Truth be told, I wish I hadn’t even wasted the money on my first year at The Art Institute’s film program. When I talked to people about the program I was told my package would have a camera (this was when DSLRs were starting to be viable filmmaking tools) and a completely from-the-ground-up education and that no

I may get blasted for this, but this is bordering on Phil Tippet levels of quality.

Now playing

Well, if there’s one thing Home Alone 2 taught us...

It’s a miracle my wedding went as well as it did. The night before the wedding my wife went to her mother’s house to drop off shoes for her younger brother, our ringbearer. She walks in to see her mother, her older brother (who took leave from the military), and her grandmother to tell her that they did not approve of

Cowboy Bebop works on so many levels because it’s such a complete package. It has a unique style. Top notch storytelling. Great voice acting. A strong understanding of cinematic and visual storytelling. To top it all off it has tremendous music. It just operates in excellence on every level.

I’ll be honest, I love this movie just the way it is but I’ll admit my admiration for this movie is due to three things: 1. Bob Hoskins giving a better performance than the movie deserves 2. Astounding creature effects 3. The fact that we live in the strange alternate world where a live action dystopian Super Mario

If another season happens I’m calling it that it’s going to be the final season and be entirely about how the family deals with George Sr.’s death (which was the result of one of Gob’s illusions).

Oh, I agree with you for the most part. I love the movie unabashedly and think that Kerry Conran was egregiously short changed after the fact.

I know it’s kind of the point, but I don’t like the way the Iron Man suit has changed from something that felt like an impressive piece of pseudo-plausible machinery to essentially being magic. I get it, it’s a constantly evolving thing and it’s even more like that in the comics, but part of what made the first movie

Gotta love that Peter Chung animation.

*Unrolls sleeves* I’m terribly sorry, I’m not sure what came over me. It’s fantastic and juggles its tone very well and is quite honestly Johnny Depp’s best performance and Martin Landau is both hilarious and heartbreaking as Bela Lugosi. It’s also incredibly well shot.

That’s actually a pretty interesting take, though it still wouldn’t be the modernized swashbuckling movie I’d like to see. Having said that, your idea would seriously be cool as hell.

I’ll even go to bat for Anderson’s Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, though it admittedly took a few views for me to appreciate what it was trying to do.

I’m sorry, but rules of cinematic honor dictate that I roll up my sleeves and challenge you to a pugilistic endeavor to defend the greatness of Tim Burton’s Ed Wood. I’m sorry it had to be this way, and I hope that you understand that this doesn’t reflect my feelings of you as a person.

I said it in another comment, but I really think the charisma failure falls on Jude Law. Paltrow’s not particularly great in it, and at times seems like she’s reading her lines off of cue cards, but she’s passable. Law, on the other hand, God love him for at least trying, just doesn’t fit the role. Brendan Fraser

Oh, absolutely. The reasoning for shooting in black and white, aside from nostalgia, was also apparently to hide any dodgy effects.
