I don't think this is out of line. I worked for Betsey Johnson before they went bankrupt (sigh) and although crazy hair, tattoos, and outlandish accessories were encouraged, we definitely had a look/dress code we needed to adhere to. You're an employee! You're selling a specific brand/look/lifestyle! It makes sense.
