I wasn’t being defensive, I was making fun of a dumb comment. The post was, if anything, backing Fleming’s story: the point being made was that it was difficult to get official confirmation of or details on that story because yokel cops were being yokels.

Marchman can speak for himself, of course, but that was an article that came with a predictable smarm backlash pre-loaded, and I think he was ready for it. The part of it that struck me as weird was the pearl-clutching by the same readers who’d have creamed their jorts if we’d uncovered a fabrication.
