I think bringing Michael Dorn in was a big help in the comedy department; his deadpan delivery can be really funny. TNG never let him explore that too much.

Ok, I didn't read the review and I haven't been watching the series since I dropped out around episode five or six or so. I think the last episode I saw involved a truck driver and possibly an artifact buried in Columbia or something. Tuned out mostly because of the cast, except for Coulson and Ming-Na Wen.
