I think they’re for sound deadening; also used on the Corvette Stingray.
Sure looks like it. If you look at BMWs of recent years with two exhaust pipes on one side (like the 28s), you can see a little butterfly valve opening and closing when they step off the line. You’ll also notice that one exhaust pipe has a ton more carbon buildup on it.

To be fair, if you’re changing a wheel, you really don’t need to put the car on ‘stands. Just keep your feet out of the way of the rotor/caliper and body.
