In a majority white country, of course it is almost always going to be white people in general’s fault.

Yes, class is about much more than income. It is about education, values, etc.
But also because of education, geography, exposure, etc., some of that population is more apt to be vocally racist, or anti-PC, which makes it so hard to separate out those things. But I agree that it is more complex than people are willing to deal with when they are feeling rage and bewilderment.
Thanks for my first laugh of the day.
I agree, and living in the Northeast I have voted for the odd sane Republican governor or incumbent senator. I would have a lot of trouble voting for some of the new Tea Party or evangelical Republicans though. I understand why some people stick to their team. Not only does Trump himself frighten me, but all the…
Right, those are the typical, old-school Republicans who stuck with the ticket.
Yes, but it is not only voting for their team for its own sake, but being conditioned over years to believe everything the other side stands for is evil, and Hillary in particular is corrupt. Like if the Democrats nominated some incompetent jackass, it would take a lot for me to actually go and vote for, say, Ted…
I think BLM backlash contributes some amount. My scariest Facebook friend, a Puerto Rican, formerly liberal NYPD detective, has basically gone off the deep end the last two years. I think he has retreated into blaming everyone except the police and particularly hates the black community now. I could see this on a…
My white 6-year-old in a white school came home today convinced that Trump was going to start a big war because that is what the other kids are telling her. Kids are definitely picking up on the angst and interpreting it in their own way.
Well, I think the founders didn’t trust the people to elect someone directly, so it was not just about states, but about having a buffer. The people are voting for other people to choose the president for them. But nowadays, it is automatic.
I know, and I voted for Obama then Sanders in the primary for those reasons. Doesn’t mean I didn’t like a lot of things about her. I just didn’t think she had a good shot in the general. Horrified to be right. I had no idea a moronic demagogue like Trump could beat her. I was more worried about Rubio.
Why the eye roll? It is not that I don’t believe these women exist or minimize their influence. I just live in VT and work in the environmental field and got a masters in a sciency field. I am pretty much surrounded by commies. By connecting, I mean it is hard to figure out how to physically see, influence,…
And college-educated white women tried, married women tried, Democratic women overwhelmingly tried, women with post-graduate degrees overwhelmingly tried. While no one should be able to ignore that white people elected Trump, I honestly don’t know what can be accomplished, beyond venting, by pointing fingers at the…
I don’t know if I already said this here or elsewhere, but people like easy answers. They want to hear that if only you cut their taxes and cut someone else’s benefits and keep other people out of the country, the economy will magically get better.
That’s what I normally feel, but I was pretty undecided in the primary between Sanders and Clinton. Although at that point you are trying to figure out who has a better chance of winning, not just who you actually like more. People don’t always fit in neat boxes of Democrat or Republican. I don’t know, pro-life…
Right, but practically speaking, how do I talk to a random person in Michigan? I live in VT. I mean, I guess I could go on a road trip and start randomly approaching people in bars to convert them, but that doesn’t seem very effective. I mean, I generally get along with an eclectic group of folks but I also am…
Yep. And Clinton won the popular. Something about how elections are run in this country should change, although there is probably a large chunk of the non-voting population that simply doesn’t give a fuck.
It is. So much about the story is about the white working class. Looking at the CNN exit polls, it is clear that Clinton won the working class in general, and under 100K vote, while when separated into segments, Trump won (barely) the $50-100K and everything above. But, Clinton won the college-educated white women,…
Natural Resources Defense Council and Conservation Law Foundation are also environmental powerhouses. And like all things, look to local and regional environmental groups as well. I work on clean energy issues on the state level where a lot gets decided.
