The toys weren't the problem. It's strongly implied that he spent his entire life in that room (or, at most, the castle) up until Ghetsis sent him out into the world to take on the league. He was also kept apart from human interaction. In the real world, this would be classed as abuse.

Exeggcute is actually seeds, not eggs. To quote Bulbapedia, "Despite looking like eggs, Exeggcute is actually more closely related to plant seeds." I know it's weird. Blame Game Freak for that.

People convinced others to send them money/items and walked off with it, or used normal gameplay mechanics to assault and destroy ships.
