I once read an article about a couple kids who sailed around the world with their parents for a couple years and took a correspondence course on their sailboat and I was SO JEALOUS. Sounds like you had a very cool childhood. Did you learn any other languages?

Counterpoint: I was weird and socially awkward in public school and it was hell until high school. Seriously, I was so unhappy I cut myself repeatedly just to deal with having to go there every day (my parents didn’t know it was that serious.) I would’ve been much happier going to museums and doing math at my own

Given Americans’ general lack of scientific literacy, those courses are important. When you hear a story on CNN or Fox about climate or the environment or stem cells or health care or infrastructure or vaccines, it helps to have background knowledge so you know what makes sense and what doesn’t.
