@balletomane: As your phone is GSM (the standard AT&T uses) rather than CDMA (Verizon), and they use totally different chipsets, no you must buy a new phone.

@gthing: Because the iPhone is coming to their network, and that's something people ostensibly wanted. If a new iPad were debuting (and not just an iPad bundled with a 3g piggyback) Apple would be the one to announce it.
