Don’t know that anyone will ever say anything dumber than Ben Shapiro’s infamous “So what if the water level rises 5 to 10 feet? You think the people living on the coast won’t just sell their houses and move?”

Oh she’s a rightwinger 100% and none of this should be surprising. Poster girl for Jesus is Love and #boymom bossbabe.

And yet, by 1920 the US started raising the age of consent to 18 years old, so they knew this was all pretty fucked up. Glorifying illegal practices is major feature of a lot of popular music. They did it because they could do it, not because they genuinely thought there was nothing wrong with sleeping with 12-16 year

It’s not surprising that so many musicians/artists/directors who thought they were the coolest and the edgiest were trying this bullshit. The film version of Lolita came out in ‘62, and the Beatles and every other rock band were singing about teenagers.

agree, just commented similarly

“In advocating the case of the...dispossessed, it is a right, and not a charity, that I am pleading for. To create a national fund. out of which there shall be paid to every person, when arrived at the age of 21 years, the sum of fifteen pounds of sterling, as a compensation in part, for the loss of his or her natural

It’s not just rich people. It’s also working-class and middle-class people who are angry that THEY aren’t getting help (at least in ways that they are able to recognize as help).

All this is simple Economics 101, and if rich people would sit still long enough to pay attention, it helps them too. When you give people who don’t have enough money to live on more money, they spend it on things to live on. If they have children, they spend it on things for the children. What — well, I don’t know

that a sizable percentage of the population along with Fox News and their ilk will be infuriated by this is really...infuriating? Depressing? Completely predictable? Especially when so many people in this group call themselves Christians. The amount of cognitive dissonance needed to reconcile these two things is

So this was posted:

My daughter did competitive trampoline up to level 6. What you see at Olympics is 12+. It would hurt my back and knees every time I saw her land so abruptly, but she swore that it was fine. This has been an interesting week for us because she’s grown up in gymnastics, cheers, power tumbling, and trampoline. It’s her

I don’t buy it. My entire Hispanic family and their circles of friends greet each other with two kisses on the cheek. They could cop the exact same excuse, they “do it with everyone”, yet no one has ever confused what’s appropriate in a business setting.

This is all a lot of “forget what I said; this is what I meant” to all this. Cuomo expects everyone to understand the intent of his actions (assuming they weren’t somehow shitty) without regard for how they would reasonably make the recipients feel about them. I’m sure he and every other narcissist would react the

Nope. My father was born in America in 1924 and he was DEFINITELY raised to know that physically touching was for intimates and private spaces. Hearty handshakes were the extent of polite public physical contact. Period.

He already heavily implied that one victim was overreacting because she’d been sexually assaulted in the past.

Cuomo’s “peculiar way of defending himself” is a very common tactic adopted by shitty men. Publicize and generalize your shitty behavior so that it seems normal. See also “everybody does it”. And the classic dragging bystanders into being complicit with the behavior like Cuomo did with the gown comment to the

I did it, but not like they think I did it, Cuomo is saying, in so many words. I did it, but because I didn’t mean to harm them, everyone must have experienced my behavior as innocuous.

I think it’s also worth pointing out, as a footnote to this, that Biles’ withdrawal made room for other athletes to shine (who would not have otherwise had the opportunity to medal.) I read a story about how Mykayla Skinner was getting ready to board a plane back to the states when she got word that she was needed,

Cuomo’s peculiar way of defending himself

I read a Q&A with her somewhere (sorry I don’t remember the link), and her description of the “twisties” sounds terrifying. It sounds like a really good way to break one’s leg/back/neck. I’m glad she could recognize the potential consequences and make a smart decision about it, in spite of all the pressure to do so
