You would get the original illustrations also if you just buy through Scholastic! Harper-Collins is the original publisher, and they changed the images. Scholastic licenses the books, and intentionally retain the original illustrations.

Harper-Collins' version has the new illustrations, but if you buy it licensed through Scholastic, they still sell the edition with Gammell's terrifying and perfect illustrations.

I never read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark as a kid (I've read it recently though), but I did own Alvin Schwartz's collection of stories for younger kids, In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories. I loved it.
