I just came from a trip to Ontario and Quebec — there, the pedestrians do that in the middle of the road, never mind the bike lane. (At one point I had to wait for a couple of people standing in the middle of the road and having a chat.)

I read it as a teen and loved it (although I loved their Doon more) — I can still appreciate some of it if I look at it through those eyes, but yes, it certainly has a pretty limited audience.
