It's a nice feature for the phone, but I REALLY need this for my Mac. The standard notifier for Mac only checks the inbox. Is there any chance there's something equivalent out there anyone knows of?

Also, canning is not difficult to do and botulism is only a problem if air gets in the jar. If you follow instructions and make sure your jars are sealed, you won't have a problem. @anrcox001: It should work still. My issue with the hack is that I don't really want my pot lids in the open and I don't think that would work right on my cabinet door. The PVC dish rack solution would work better for my pot lids than this.
